Follow this month-by-month guide to keep your Bermuda grass healthy and green all year long.

 

Month Weekly General Instructions
January Week 1-4: Lawn is dormant. Keep off the grass during frost to prevent damage.
February Week 1-2: Clean up debris.
Week 3-4: Apply pre-emergent herbicide if soil temps reach 55°F.
March Week 1-2: First mow of the season (scalp to remove dead tissue).
Week 3-4: Check for green-up; do not fertilize until fully green.
April Week 1-4: Mow weekly at 1-1.5 inches. Apply first round of fertilizer.
May Week 1-4: Peak growth begins. Mow every 5-7 days. Water 1 inch per week.
June Week 1-4: Apply preventative grub control. Maintain deep, infrequent watering.
July Week 1-4: Watch for heat stress. Mow high if temps exceed 95°F.
August Week 1-4: Continue regular mowing and watering. Watch for armyworms.
September Week 1-2: Apply fall pre-emergent.
Week 3-4: Slow down nitrogen fertilization.
October Week 1-4: Raise mowing height slightly. Prepare for dormancy.
November Week 1-4: Lawn turns brown (dormancy). Mulch leaves into the turf.
December Week 1-4: Dormant period. Avoid heavy traffic and enjoy the break!
